I asked this to a few blind communities in Livejournal and couldn't really get any help. A few people made suggestions, but they weren't really accessible for me or didn't work as I need them to. Anyway, I'm trying to back up my entire lj, including comments and things behind cuts. I could understand if the voice posts aren't included, so that' ok, but I want to be able to read the text of my lj without having to get some other software or having to import it somewhere else. So I'm looking for something that can save in txt, rtf or both. I need something that's accessible with either Hal or JFW. Oh, and some of my entries have Greek in them, so if the program supports nonEnglish characters, that would be great. I also want to know how to search behind cuts on the actual lj page. I've tried searching for the title of something that was under a cut and it won't let me find it. Finally, what is this snapshot thing that keeps appearing at the top of my journal and how do I get rid of it? I thought it was added onto the navigation strip, but when I went to viewing options, they said nothing about the strip, so I guess they got rid of it. I donno about you, but I'm finding lj is becoming too cluttered and complicated. I've been on Livejournal for four years now, but part of me wishes I could find a simpler but still well-populated and unsensored journal to use.

mmm, nope, I still love LJ. i don't find it cluttered at all. i'd be glad if they got rid of the navigation strip, though I haven't seen this evidence; maybe it depends on the style you have for your LJ.
as far as I've read (and I haven't looked into it recently), there's not currently a tool that can restore the LJ cuts (well you'd get all the entry but not the cuts) and comments or anything like that. The tools I've read about so far seem to save to some weird format which I've never heard of.
I'd say the only way it seems one can backup their LJ in text is to do it manually, one page at a time, but nman that's ridiculous I know. I've tried that with mine, and likewise I've had mine for four years.
I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm out-of-date with recent tools.
Merry Christmas!

This is a very good point. Once I get omni with flash memory built in, I am considering moving my main diary to the pac mate, although the obvious disadvantage of that is that I would no longer be able to share it with the people who need to see it.

My question is this: How the blood yhell do I post an entry? lol I'm still trying to figure that out.

First, to post an entry, go to your lj page (that is, the page of your journal) and then to update entries. You'll see the box for creating an entry and then after that, a bunch ofoptions like current mood, music etc. You could use them or ignore them and go straight to the submit button. Alternatively, there are some clients that you could download so you don't have to go to the lj site itself to post. I personally use Simagic.

Second, here's something I posted yesterday to a few blind communities on Livejournal. Ok, I downloaded the LiveJournal Backup / Search Utility and almost everything is accessible. I say almost cause I don't understand why, when I go to the process page and even choose the folder where I want the lj to be, it says I haven't told it what to create. I'm just really confused. On the bright side, it does have a browser which enables me to read the various entries, so if worse comes to worst, I'll just copy and paste them in Wordpad and make my own file. But I'd really rather just export it and convert it to txt. Sorry for all this rambling, but this actually looks like a good product and I'm hoping to learn how to use it.

Update, as usual, this looks inaccessible. I went to this page
http://ljbackup.yamnet.co.uk/help/xmloptions.htm
And they talk about a bunch of options that neither Hal nor JFW reads. It only says select user, main, generate html, generate csv output, generate xml output, minimize while processing, and then process backup button. I see nothing about how many files to generate or what entries to include. So something's going on here. Anyway, if you wanna play with it, download the software at
http://ljbackup.yamnet.co.uk/
And if you figure it out, please let me know.

As a note to you guys here on The Zone, today, I decided to just save the stupid thing manually, using the browser from that program and copying and pasting the text into Wordpad. It's slow, but it's still faster than doing it by checking my history. I just wish there was an easier way to do this. Plus, I can't save my comments this way. I just need to get the xml file or whatever, so I can run it through through the Lj Backup Toolkit (different from the Lj Backup Utility) and turn it into text. Btw, I tried using the export thing on the website but couldn't tell whether or not it was actually downloading my journal, since there was no progress bar etc.

Why do you want to back it up anyway?

I want to be able to read it when I'm not on the site, and more importantly, to search all my entries. I put ljfind in my user profile so that I could search my entries, but it won't let me search what's inside of an lj cut or even the title of the cut and neither will the main search function on the Livejournal website. Plus, if I ever do decide to go to another journal site, I won't have to do this last minute.
